Dear Cliff,
A slender 12 year-old girl cradles her toddler brother in her arms, cooing and rocking slowly back and forth. Her dark saucer eyes speak volumes of tear-filled nights and unfilled stomachs. AIDS has cruelly snatched the life of their mother, their father -- she is his only family and he is hers. A child herself, she must now care for her brother... she must find hope.
Our Plan:
To build the first HopeBuilders "Tapestry Orphan Village" in Kayamandi, South Africa, a squatter community located 45 minutes driving time east of Cape Town. These six homes will each house six children and a caregiver and consist of 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, bath and living room.
Using a panelized wall system that allows for rapid construction, the homes will be fireproof, weatherproof, insulated, elevated and painted in vibrant native African colors. Complete with electricity, running water and plumbing, the cost to build a Tapestry Orphan Home (including land, building and furnishings) is $18,000, or $3,000 per child.
Unlike many orphanages in South Africa, this will be built on dedicated land in the heart of the squatter village so that connection from the community remains unbroken. Through our local Kuyasa ministry partner, the children are lovingly fed, clothed, tutored and cared for.

But most of all, they are given hope, a future and shown Christ's love in a tangible way. Future plans call for building these Tapestry Orphan Homes throughout the village of Kayamandi with potential in other squatter communities throughout South Africa.
When:
As part of a Threads Africa mission trip and working side-by-side with local residents and our ministry partners, mission teams will build homes from start to finish in less than 5 days with the first orphan home to be built in July 2009.
Your Part:
There are many donation levels to choose: Your $3,000 gift will provide a Tapestry Orphan Home for one child. Other options include:

Your donation of $1,983 covers the cost of a roof
Your donation of $744 provides a bathroom with sink, toilet and tub/shower
Your donation of $446 provides a solar water tank and hot water system
Your donation of $223 provides an operable window with security bars and an interior door and hardware
Your donation of $112 provides a front door and security hardware
Your donation of $58 provides a wall panel
Your donation of $50 per month for 60 months will provide a new home for one child
You can also donate any amount in a one-time gift

You may also sponsor a child for $35 per month through Horizon International which provides nutritious food, clothing, basic medical care and education.
Another option to consider is to become a tangible part of this life-giving effort and join our July mission team. Your contribution can forcefully impact how these people live. And like an indelible imprint on your heart, your life will never be the same. Click here to learn more about the July trip.
More than 40% of those living in Kayamandi are HIV positive. Over 660,000 children in South Africa are orphaned due to AIDS, which has claimed the lives of their parents and relatives. And yet, in these poverty-stricken villages, God's boundless strength finds refuge in the heart of these tenacious loving people.
